I want to capitalize on modern technologies to understand and preserve knowledge.

Revolutionizing Publishing Archaeological Data Fund

The Revolutionizing Publishing Archaeological Data fund will allow the Libraries to build a program to publish at-risk text, images, plans, and datasets from the NYU Institute for the Study of the Ancient World’s (ISAW) vast portfolio of records of archaeological excavations. This project aims to change how archaeological data is published, making it easier to share archaeological data and ensuring it is preserved for the future.

Archival Imaging System Fund

Help us to build upon our current archival imaging system and expand imaging services necessary to keep pace in a digital-first world. A new archival imaging system will facilitate our photographing of large materials, 3-dimensional objects, and photographic negatives as well as our ability to make these images accessible to users online.

Digital Collections Portal Fund

The Digital Collections Portal fund will support the creation of a single online portal to showcase accessible, digital materials from the NYU Libraries’ collections, including Special Collections materials. This fund will allow us to provide access for all users, regardless of location. This need is especially critical as we work to meet the scholarly needs of students and scholars outside the NYC area.

Film Preservation/Video/Audio Labs Fund

This fund will support the preservation of NYU Libraries’ motion picture film, video, and audio collections through preventive and remedial treatments, training, research, and select digitization projects. Preserving these items is crucial to safeguarding our cultural heritage, preserving our historical record, maintaining artistic legacies, and facilitating education and research.

Ruth Gruber Film Preservation Fund

Ruth Gruber (1911-2016) was a groundbreaking reporter, photojournalist, and author She also produced several documentaries and films that focused on important social and political issues of her time. Gruber used her skills as a journalist and photographer to document the struggles and triumphs of marginalized communities, bringing their stories to a wider audience through film. Through this fund, we can preserve and digitize Gruber’s commitment to social justice and humanitarian causes.

Preserving At-Risk Websites Fund

Websites and other quickly changing digital communication platforms represent a critical information source for scholarship. However, web archiving, the process of collecting, preserving, and providing access to preserved websites, is enormously resource-intensive for libraries. The Preserving At-Risk Websites Fund is a first step towards building the NYU Libraries’ capacity to preserve at-risk websites. Funding will support a short-term consultant to create a plan for incorporating web archiving into our current collection and preservation workflows.

Access to Image Resources in the Arts Fund

The Access to Image Resources Fund will allow the Libraries to create a digital collection of images that can be used for teaching and research in the arts. In addition, this fund will help to establish the NYU Libraries as a leader in creating image collections that are open and accessible to all. Digitization of NYU-Centered Materials Fund

Funding for this project will allow us to digitize NYU yearbooks, course bulletins, and other University-produced publications that catalog and commemorate the NYU experience. These materials build on the close connections between our alumni and the University. Digitization will enable alumni and others easier and more open access to these wonderful collections.

Student Communities of Practice in Data Science Fund

NYU Data Services, a joint unit between the NYU Libraries and IT, is a locus for students learning from and alongside each other. Although data science is practiced widely throughout the University, the data science communities are highly dispersed. This fund will support communities of data science learners through regular events and meetups, alumni career days, and a student awards program. This fund will increase collaborative learning, grow academic and professional networks for our students, and help students compete in the job market.

Preserving At-Risk Video Recordings Fund

This fund ensures that videos will be accessible for future generations of students and scholars. The Libraries need to preserve open-reel video tapes from the Special Collections that are at risk of becoming unplayable soon. Open-reel video is an analog recording format that requires special equipment and handling, and is largely obsolete, making its preservation both urgent and challenging.
