Policy Purpose and Scope
This policy governs the use of material owned by NYU’s Division of Libraries. Its aim is to ensure the long-term availability of material for study and research. This policy is in addition to the Use of Library Space Policy and Usage of Libraries Electronic Resources Policy. The usage of NYU Special Collections is defined by additional policies. This policy supplements all University Policies and Guidelines.
The Libraries and University are committed to addressing and resolving violations in a speedy manner in accordance with established processes. Violations of this policy may be referred for disciplinary action under applicable University policies and processes. Where appropriate, violations may be referred to local, state, or federal law enforcement officials.
Policy Statement
NYU Libraries provides access to physical and digital materials to support research, study, teaching, and the general pursuit of knowledge. This policy is intended to outline a set of general expectations for using library materials in a manner that ensures their long-term preservation and availability to other community members. Users are expected to abide by Copyright Laws when using library materials.
Use of Books, Audiovisual Materials, and Library Laptops
To ensure the long-term accessibility of library materials for everyone, users are expected to handle library physical materials carefully and care for them in a manner that prevents damage from heat, water, pests, food, and sharp objects.
- All physical library materials must be checked out before leaving the library.
- Library-use-only materials may not leave the library.
- Users are expected to renew or return items by the due date.
- Users are expected to pay for the replacement of any items that are lost or damaged while checked out.
- Users are prohibited from intentionally concealing or hiding materials in the library.
- Some library resources are limited, and occasionally, users may be asked to return materials before their original due date.
- Users are prohibited from intentionally damaging materials, including:
- Removing pages, binding materials, or library notices, such as interlibrary loan bands.
- Marking any part of a library book with any writing material or temporary sticky notes.
- Intentional scratching or damaging media or laptops.
Use of Dedicated Computer Terminals, Printers, and Other Equipment
- Some library resources can only be used at dedicated library computer terminals or have restricted access policies. These terminals are available on a first-come, first-served basis and may be used only for the resources offered through them.
- Users may not remove library equipment (e.g., scanners, keyboards, mice, printer paper, staplers) without permission from library staff.
