     Secondary Sources: Locating Articles

Typically, articles deal with a more focused or narrow topic than books, they reveal current research interests, and are at times a forum for initial publication or reexamination of a specific primary source.

In order to find articles, you need to use an Index. Many indexes are now available on the web. Key indexes for research in history are listed below. For additional resources, browse the full list of electronic indexes and databases for History.

America: History and Life 1964-. [Click "Web"]
Provides citations and abstracts to articles in over 1,900 journals on all aspects of American and Canadian history, from the settlement period to the present. Citations are available for articles published from 1964 on.

Historical Abstracts. 1954-. [Click "Web"]
An index to European and world history from 1450 to the present, searchable by author, subject and keyword. Covers about 2000 historical journals published in 50 languages; however, it is possible to limit searches to articles in English. Includes book reviews.

Periodical Abstracts [Click "Web"]
A multi-disciplinary resource, especially useful for research on contemporary topics or for the beginning stages of a research project. Offers some citations and some full-text from a wide range of English language academic journals, news magazines, and newspapers. Updated monthly. Access is available for articles published from approximately 1980 on, depending upon the title of the resource.

British Humanities Index. 1962-.
REF1 AI3. B8
An annual index, arranged by author and subject. Includes references to about a dozen journals not included in the indexes above, largely on the history of Ireland and Great Britain. Most are in Bobst.

Readers Guide to Periodical Literature. 1890-.
REF1 AI3 .R47: 1890-1899
REF1 AI3 .R4: 1900-present
A print index produced monthly with annual accumulations, the Readers' Guide is a wonderful resource for finding material published throughout the 20th century in major US magazines. Arrangement is alphabetical, with author and subject headings. Includes reviews of books, CDs, dance, film, theater, TV, and more. Also indexes poems, short stories, and works of fiction.

Wilson Select. 1994-. [Click "Web"]
A searchable index of approximately 800 journals covering information in Science, Business and the Humanities.

Also see these additional indexes and databases for research in American History. This list includes print resources that are often overlooked.

For those indexes that only provide citations, you'll need to perform two steps in your article search:

    1. search the index by author or keyword, making note of the journal name and issue in which the article appeared;
    2. search by title of the journal in BobCat to find out if it's available in Bobst, and retrieve the call number (for bound issues in the stacks) or information about holdings in microfilm or microfiche.
