The Avery Fisher Center (AFC) has collections of videos, music recordings, and reserve scores available for loan to students, faculty, and staff.

Visit our Collections Access page for details about how to access physical materials, online resources, and collections-related services.

Physical Materials

All AFC physical materials are listed in the online catalog, BobCat. Use the “Resource Type” filter in BobCat to narrow your search results to Audio, Videos, or Scores. The online catalog is also the portal for our digital streaming collections of recorded music and video. These are available 24/7 to all users with an nyu.edu login.

Physical materials located onsite in the AFC are available for check-out on a first come-first serve basis during our public hours, up to 15 minute before closing.

Physical materials located offsite must be requested for delivery.

To borrow an onsite item, find the call number in BobCat of the item you wish to check out, then bring that number to the AFC service desk on Floor 7 of Bobst Library.. If you cannot find what you are looking for in the catalog, ask our staff for assistance, either in person at the service desk or by email at afc-admin-group@nyu.edu.

Large portions of the AFC’s collections are currently housed offsite. Borrowers with active nyu.edu accounts should request these online via the online catalog.

Offsite DVDs and CDs are eligible for locker delivery, but VHS tapes and vinyl discs must be retrieved at the AFC service desk. Undergraduate, master’s, and staff patrons must use VHS tapes and vinyl discs on the AFC’s in-house equipment. Faculty and teaching assistants may, upon request, take those formats out of the library for classroom use.

For videos, music recordings, or scores we do not own at all, you can suggest a purchase.

Video and Audio for Course Reserves

Access to our reserve DVDs, CDs, and other physical media is available for eligible users. For distance learning, our guides to audio and video databases provide links to a host of online resources, including streaming film and music collections from Kanopy, Swank Digital Campus, Alexander Street, and many others.

With the expiration of pandemic-related emergency access protocols for library materials, our ability to provide online streaming is be constrained by copyright law and the University’s copyright policy, but we will continue to do our best to procure whatever is requested by faculty to support teaching and learning. Faculty who wish to place videos, audio recordings, or music scores on reserve for courses should use the online request procedure.

Faculty Bookings for Video and Audio

Faculty, PhD candidates, and administrators can schedule pickups of AFC materials (both offsite and onsite) to ensure that an item is available for classroom use at a certain date and time. Please submit your request with the video loan form at least 24 hours prior to pickup. You will receive an email when your requested item has been confirmed.

Returning AFC Materials

Please return checked-out materials directly to the AFC service desk during the Center’s operating hours. If the AFC is closed, you can use either the return slot to the left of the AFC service desk, or the designated “DVD/CD” dropbox on Floor 1 between the revolving doors. Please do not use any other book drops elsewhere at Bobst Library or at Consortium libraries.
