Psychological, Health, and Educational Tests

RG#7

This Guide presents a selection of online and print resources related to test instruments in the fields of psychology, health, and education. For more general disciplinary information, students should consult the Bobst Library's subject web pages for: Psychology Resources (http://library.nyu.edu/research/psych/); Health Resources (http://library.nyu.edu/research/health/); and Education Resources (http://library.nyu.edu/research/education/).

This Guide Contains:

Section 1: Databases for Psychological, Health, or Educational Tests

This section provides a list of databases that index tests in some way. These databases can tell you a variety of information about the test, including:

  • Where a test appears or was used in a journal article or research study
  • Review information of a given test, including reliability and validity of the test
  • Where to purchase a commercially available test
  • Mental Measurements Yearbook. [nyu.edu accounts only]
MMY provides original reviews of and citations to articles about mostly commercially available educational, psychological, and vocational tests. Although called a "yearbook" new editions usually are published every two or three years. The online version begins in 1989 and is updated more frequently than the print editions (see below in Section 3 for the print edition).
    • Steps and tips for searching:
      • Be sure to vary your terms when searching, as many tests are known by multiple names, or their acronyms, and MMY isn't able to cross check for variations.
      • To make your search more exact, try the advanced search option and search for the test title only within the citation field.
      • If you do not find the test you are looking for, you might want to rerun your search via the Buros website (http://buros.unl.edu/buros/jsp/search.jsp). If you find the test via this route, look at the bottom of the record for the test and it will tell you which printed volume of MMY the review appeared in; you can then find it in our printed copies of MMY.
  • Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI) [nyu.edu accounts only]
1985-present, with many earlier measures. HaPI indexes the use of tests and measurement instruments (i.e., questionnaires, interview schedules, checklists, index measures, coding schemes/manuals, rating scales, projective techniques, vignettes/scenarios, tests) in journal literature in a variety of fields including public health, nursing, psychology, human resources, sociology, and communication. Records are indexed according to the MeSH subject headings and the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms (Ref1 Desk Z695.1 P7 T48 2004).
    • Steps and tips for searching:
      • To find only those articles that contain the actual instrument, limit by checking the "Primary Source <PS>" box.
      • To search by author name, enter the author's last name and first initial in the search box, and then click the author icon above; you will be taken to a list of author names, where you can select all that are appropriate to your search.
      • In some cases, you can order more information or the instrument itself by contacting the Behavioral Measurement Database Services at bmdshapi@aol.com; materials available through this method will contain a note within the abstract.
  • CINAHL [nyu.edu accounts only]
An index of the literature of nursing and the allied health professions. Sometimes, a search of CINAHL turns up an article where the test or survey instrument is not only mentioned, but re-printed. If the instrument itself is indexed in CINAHL it will have the Publication Type "research instrument" (e.g., Brief Pain Inventory). Similarly, one can perform a search and Limit to the Publication Type "research instrument." The Instrumentation (IT) field in a record includes the names of instruments used in research studies indexed by CINAHL. To search for articles with instrument names, enter the most unique word or phrase in the name, for example pain.it searches for "pain" in the Instrumentation field.
    • Steps and tips for searching:
      • From the CINAHL main search page, select the "More Fields" icon above the search button.
      • Enter a word or phrase in the text entry box, (e.g. "pain"); scroll down and make a check mark next to the field "it: Instrumentation" field.
      • Click on "perform search."
      • The resulting set of documents will all contain the word or phrase searched in the instrumentation field of each record.
  • PsycINFO via Ovid [nyu.edu accounts only]
An index of publications that the APA examines regularly to identify psychologically relevant material, including journal articles, dissertations, reports, English-language book chapters and books, and other scholarly documents. The TM field ["tests and measures" field] contains the names of published tests and measures mentioned in the source document. This field may contain multiple tests or measures.
    • Steps and tips for searching:
      • From the main PsycINFO search page, select the "More Fields" icon above the search button.
      • Enter a word or phrase in the text entry box, (e.g. "bereavement"); scroll down and make a check mark next to the field "tm: Tests and Measures."
      • Click on "perform search."
      • The resulting set of documents will all contain the word or phrase searched in the Tests and Measures field of each record.
  • PsycINFO via CSA [nyu.edu accounts only]
An index of publications that the APA examines regularly to identify psychologically relevant material, including journal articles, dissertations, reports, English-language book chapters and books, and other scholarly documents. The TM field ["tests and measures" field] contains the names of published tests and measures mentioned in the source document. This field may contain multiple tests or measures.
    • Steps and tips for searching:
      • In PsycINFO via CSA, select Advanced Search.
      • Type a word or phrase into the text entry box (e.g. "bereavement"); use the drop-down menu at the right to select the "Tests and Measures,TM" field.
      • Perform search.
      • When you view the results, you will notice your search term(s) in the Tests and Measures field of the full record.
  • ERIC via Silverpatter [nyu.edu accounts only]
ERIC - Educational Resources Information Clearinghouse - is a complete bibliography of educational materials available since 1966. Indexes published and unpublished sources on thousands of educational topics, with information from from RIE (Resources in Education) and CIJE (Current Index to Journals in Education), and including materials focused on every aspect of eduacational testing.
    • Steps and tips for searching:
      • From the front screen, click the button marked "More" under the "Limit Search To" box.
      • On the left hand side, select the link "DOCUMENT TYPE."
      • In the box, scroll down and select "Tests" and/or "Tests or Questionnaires," then click "OK" at the top of the screen.
      • When you return to the search screen and run a search, the results will be limited only to those which make some use of identifiable tests and/or questionnaires.

Section 2: Finding the full text of a test instrument

There are two basic sources of test instruments: publishers who charge a fee and often allow access only to qualified professionals, and individual researchers who develop test instruments but do not market them through a publisher. Published tests must be ordered directly from the publisher. Published tests and ordering information can be obtained through publisher catalogs and Web pages and in Mental Measurements Yearbook, Tests, and Tests in Print.

Information about non-published tests often appears in journal articles, which can be located by searching in such databases as PsycINFO (psychology), CINAHL (nursing and allied health), and ERIC (education). Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI) is a database which provides brief information about non-published tests, including citations to articles that report on use of the instruments and often contain the original instrument within the article itself. See above for more information about using these databases to find actual tests. At other times, in order to obtain a copy of a non-published instrument, you may need to contact the test developer directly and request a copy of the test and permission to use it. Researchers are usually willing to oblige.

Since test makers and publishers often restrict access to qualified professionals, Bobst Library does not collect test instruments on a systematic basis. The library does, however, have a selection of unpublished tests in microfiche from the Educational Testing Service's Tests in Microfiche series. Annotated indexes to these tests are available in the 1st floor Reference area and are listed in Section 3 below.

Actual test instruments (usually brief) can sometimes be found in various books about testing. Two of the most notable in the Bobst library are Measures for Clinical Practice, by Corcoran and Fisher, and Measures of Personality and Social Psychological Attitudes, by Robinson et al., which are listed in Section 3 below.

Guidelines for Test Use

  • Code of Fair Testing Practices in Education. The Joint Committee on Testing Practices. Washington, DC: Joint Committee on Testing Practices, 1988.
Unlike the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, the Code is meant to be understood by the general public, limited to educational tests, and primarily focuses on those issues that effect the proper use of tests.
