Searching the Literature

Locating Books

Bobst Library uses the Library of Congress Classification System. Consult the online catalog Bobcat (via the WWW at http://www.bobcat.nyu.edu/ or via telnet: www.bobcat.nyu.edu [login: bobcat]. Bobcat will give you the call number for the book or journal and indicate whether the journal is bound or held in microform. Books and journals with call number Q,R,S, and T (not TR) are shelved on the 9th and 10th Floors. Those journals that are older may be on microfilm or microfiche held on Level A. Use the Library of Congress Subject Headings (shelved in the catalog area on the first floor and at the science reference desk on the ninth floor) to determine the appropriate subject headings for your topic, or start your catalog search by Keyword, then note the subject headings for relevant titles retrieved. For more help searching Bobcat, link to How to Find a Book: A Bobst Library Tutorial [http://library.nyu.edu/research/tutorials/book/]

Browsing the Stacks: circulating materials are arranged in call number order in the stacks. This means that nursing materials (call number beginning with "R" will be found on the ninth and tenth floors. Another sequence of reference books (call number begins with "Ref9 ...") are kept near the 9th floor Science Reference Desk.

Many nursing materials are classed "RT." Other Library of Congress classes of interest for browsing are:

  • QM--Human Anatomy
  • QP--Physiology
  • R 5-130.5 General Works, includes medical and nursing dictionaries
  • R 726.5-726.8--Medicine and Disease related to psychology, terminal care, dying (includes works on Palliative Care)
