Afro-American Newspapers and Journals in Bobst

Unlike the other items in this on this page, Afro-American Newspapers is not a microform set as such. It is a listing of nineteenth- and twentieth-century African-American newspapers and journals housed in Bobst, in microform and in print copy. Brief information about each title is given, along with its call number.



American Biographical Archive:

a one alphabet cumulation of almost 400 of the most important biographical reference works on the United States and Canada, originally published between the 18th and the early 20th centuries.

Arrangement: By assigned reel and frame number in alphabetical order.

Contents: This collection reproduces entries from many biographical reference works originally published in the 18th through the early 20th centuries, containing information on thousands of men and women from the United States and Canada.

Access: American Biographical Index, K.G. Saur 1993, edited by Laureen Baillie and Gerry Easter. In six volumes. An alphabetical index to the ABA, providing corresponding ABA fiche and frame number. The index gives basic biographical facts and lists original reference sources.

American Immigrant Autobiographies


Call no: Microfilm 1856

Arrangement: Arranged by assigned reel and frame number.

Contents: This collection reproduces approximately 70 manuscript autobiographies held by the Immigration History Research Center, University of Minnesota. All substantive autobiographies collected by the IHRC before 1990 are included. Autobiographies vary from 10 to 400-plus pages and follow a common format, based on questions submitted to the interviewee. Most autobiographies are in English. Of the total, 29 autobiographies are drawn from the "Finnish-American History Collection." Others recount the stories of immigrants from Italy, Russia, Poland, Ukraine, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

American Literary Annuals and Gift Books 1825-1865

Arrangement: By assigned reel and item numbers following the alphabetical arrangement of the index: see under Access, below.

Contents: Volumes of popular literature printed from 1825-1865, notable for their opulent production and romantic themes. Includes American and English works with some translations from foreign languages. Early works of noted authors are represented, four hundred and sixty-nine volumes in all. For a more complete description of the collection see the index, listed under Access, below.

Contents: American periodicals on diverse subjects, 1741-1900+. A few titles continue into the twentieth century, 1129 titles in all. Arrangement: Microfilm reels are arranged by Series (I, II, or III) and assigned reel number.

Arrangement: In two series, each divided into five subseries. Series 1 contains project information and general subject information. Series 2 contains the files of the criminologist Leonard Harrison.

Contents: This collection contains studies undertaken by, as well as files relating to the administration of, one of the earliest privately funded social science research institutions in the U.S.

Contents: This collection includes land documents, correspondence and diaries of Landon Carter and his son, Robert Wormely Carter, held in the Sabine Hall Collection of the University of Virginia Library.

Arrangement: Chronological, by year and date of daily news broadcasts. Series such as Sixty Minutes and Face the Nation are filed after the daily broadcasts, quarterly or annually.

Contents: Transcripts of CBS news broadcasts from 1963-1986, including daily broadcasts, special reports, Face the Nation, and Sixty Minutes. For a more complete description see the Index, under Access, below.

Access: CBS News Index, 1975-1986., in the first floor Reference Room. Annual volumes provide detailed subject coverage. Date and pages of transcripts are listed with codes for morning broadcasts (A), evening broadcasts (P), Sixty Minutes (60m), etc. The CBS News Index was not published for the years 1963-1974.

Early American Imprints I, 1639-1800

Arrangement: By assigned sequential number, listed in the National Index of American Imprints (see Access, below).

Contents: Comprehensive collection of monographs, pamphlets, and broadsides printed in America between 1639 and 1800. Based on Charles Evans' American Bibliography (see Access, below), over 45,000 items in all. An effort was made to include all works for which copies could be located. Note: Evans' bibliography includes serials, which are not in the microprint collection. See Related microform collections, below.

  • Shipton, Clifford K. and James E. Mooney. National Index of American Imprints through 1800. Z1215.F923, in the first floor Reference Room and the Microform Center. Lists numbers for each item in the microprint collection. This is usually the most direct access tool to the microprints. Many corrections to Evans entries are included.
  • Evans, Charles. American Bibliography. Z1215.E92, in the first floor Reference Room and the Microform Center. Volumes are arranged by year and author (or title for anonymous works). Each volume contains an author and subject index. Volume Fourteen is a cumulative index by author and title.
  • Bristol, Roger P. Supplement to Charles Evans' American Bibliography. Z1215.E922, in the first floor Reference Room and the Microform Center. A major addition to Evans' work, arranged by year. Note: Bristol's items have been renumbered for the microprint collection; the National Index (#1, above) lists the new numbers.
  • CD-ROM index: Catalogue of early American imprints, 1639- 1800, produced by the American Antiquarian Society. This computerized index allows subject and keyword searching for titles in the microprint set. Available in the Avery Fisher Center, Bobst second floor.

Early American Newspapers

Arrangement: By state or colony, city, and title.

Contents: American newspapers, mainly from 1704-1820, a few titles into the 1830's. The collection presently contains about half of the 2120 titles published before 1820; titles are added periodically.

Access: Most of the collection, including all newly received titles, is on microfilm. The collection began as microprints, which have been retained. The following provide various access points:

  1. Lists by title and state/colony are available at the Microform Center service desk. These lists include any newly arrived titles not listed elsewhere. Titles on microfilm and microprint are distinguished by call number entries.
  2. Brigham, Clarence Saunders. History and Bibliography of American Newspapers 1690-1820. Z6951.B8, in the first floor Reference Room. The source work for the collection; offers descriptions of titles, title variations, locations of extant originals; arrangement by colony/state with title index.

    ( Note: the earliest- and latest-issued portions of the collection are not included in the Kellerman guide, which lists all titles as microfilm whether or not Bobst's version is microprint or film; see Access tool #1, above.

Early American Periodicals Index to 1850

Call no: Microprint 3

Arrangement: Separate indexes for:

  • A. General prose, by author or anonymous title;
  • B. Fiction, by author or anonymous title;
  • C. Poetry, by author, anonymous title, or first line;
  • D. Book reviews, by book author or anonymous title;
  • E. Songs, by lyricist, composer, or first line;
  • F. Subjects, essentially following Library of Congress Headings, but with many variations.

Contents: Indexes covering about 340 American magazines published through 1850. The Index was compiled at New York University, mainly as a WPA project. Entries are sometimes flawed or eccentric due to the non-professional status of the indexers. However, the there are around 650,000 mainly accurate entries in all.

The Emma Goldman Papers, a microfilm edition

Arrangement: Chronological, except for reels 54 and 55, which are thematically organized drafts of essays and lectures.

Contents: A comprehensive collection of the correspondence and writings of Emma Goldman, as well as relevant government documents.

Access: Publisher's Guide, Emma Goldman: a guide to her life and documentary sources, edited by Candace Falk.

The guide provides a reel list, an index to the reels by series, and introductory essays to the reels. Also contains an introduction to Emma Goldman's life, a chronology and illustrations. An orientation to the set is also available from the Emma Goldman Papers web site.


Gerritsen Collection of Women's History, 1543-1945

Call numbers: Microfiche 145 and Microfilm 1113

Arrangement: Monographs by assigned whole or decimal number, e.g. 23 or 341.4, corresponding to the alphabetical arrangement of the collection. Periodicals receive a "P" number, e.g. P203, and are shelved after the monographs. Most of the collection is on microfiche; some titles were placed on microfilm due to oversized pages and are filed under the film call number (Film 1113). The publisher's guide adds a language prefix, e.g. "A" for American English, which is not used in finding the microfiche. See Access, below.

Contents: Books, pamphlets, and periodicals on women's history in Europe and America, around five thousand volumes in all. Works in various languages are included. See the publisher's guide (listed below) for a more detailed description.

Arrangement: By alpha-numeric subject code as listed in the publisher's guides, e.g. report "SE 134" is the 134th report within the Health Services category; see also Access, below.

Contents: Reports on many aspects of national health care, dating from 1970-1980, including facilities, planning, statistics, etc. Over 1,300 titles in all. See the publisher's guides listed under Access, below, for a more complete description of the collection.

Access: Publishers guides: Health Care 1970-1978 plus supplements for 1979 and 1980. MF122 index, in the Microform Center and the first floor Reference Room, Z6673.M66 in the Social Science Center. Guides list reports under sixteen broad subject categories with full bibliographic information and the alphanumeric codes by which the microfiche are filed. Author, title, and detailed subject indexes are also provided.


John F. Kennedy National Security Files, Vietnam 1961-1963

Arrangement: By consecutive reel numbers, and frame numbers within reels, from the publisher's guide (see Access, below). For example, the index entry 4-0734 refers to the seven hundred and thirty-fourth item ("frame") on reel four. The frame numbers appear on the microfilm below the pages of text.

Contents: Varied materials including memoranda, intelligence reports, correspondence, etc. relating to Vietnam, from the office of McGeorge Bundy, the special assistant for national security affairs under JFK. The original files are housed at the John F. Kennedy Library. For a more complete description of the collection see the publisher's guide, listed under Access, below.

Margaret Sanger Papers: documents from the Sophia Smith Collection and College Archives

Arrangement: The collection is arranged in five subseries:

  1. Correspondence (reels S01-S60). Arranged chronologically;
  2. Organization records/conference materials (reels S61-S68). Arranged alphabetically by name of organization and then by category of material;
  3. Legal/government material (reel S69). Legal and government records are grouped separately, with each group organized chronologically by legal case or legislative bill;
  4. Writings (reels S70-S77), including diaries, journals, speeches, and unpublished manuscripts. Arranged by category of material, and chronologically within category;
  5. Miscellany (reels S77-S83), primarily documents relating to Sanger's non-birth control activities. Arranged in subject groups.

Contents: This set reproduces all of Sanger's correspondence and writings deposited in the Sophia Smith Collection -- @45,000 documents on 83 reels. The set covers the years 1914-1962, with a few additional documents before 1914 or after 1962. The documents include extensive correspondence, organization records and material concerning Sanger's personal life, friendships, and family.
