SCOTCH TAPE Scotch tape should never be used to repair a torn page. The ingredients that compose the adhesive and carrier of the scotch tape are chemically unstable. The plasticized carrier dries and becomes embrittled and the adhesive decomposes, leaving an acidic residue in the paper. As the paper ages, those areas of the page that absorbed the adhesive will dry, crack, and break off, resulting in a loss of text.
