RECASING Just as "casing-in" refers to the attaching of a books original covers to a text block, recasing refers to the reattachment of new, replacement covers to a text block. When the cover of a book has become detached through heavy use or mishandling, the damaged cover is stripped away, the spine of the text block is cleaned, new endpapers are attached and the text block is recased in new covers. Very often conservation technicians are able to save original cover materials to paste onto the new covers.
