PHOTOGRAPH PRESERVATION In addition to preserving book materials, the Preservation Department is responsible for preserving many different library materials in a variety of formats. The 4 x 5 black and white negatives displayed here suffer from a shrinking of the diacetate film base and a blistering of the gelatin binder. Diacetate was a popular film base used in the 1950s and 1960s. To prevent the loss of the image, the negatives must be duplicated using a more stable polyester film base before the shrinking and blistering occurs. A duplicated negative is shown here with the positive print produced from it.
