NOTE-TAKING Note-taking in books represents a kind of deliberate mutilation that can be easily avoided. Highlighters, pens, and pencils permanently stain the pages of a book, deposit damaging chemicals in the paper, and distract the reader. When note-taking is excessive, replacement pages must be sought.

The over-zealous note-taker in this example obviously tried to avoid marking the pages of this book, however, Post-its are not a good alternative. The adhesive used on Post-its leaves damaging residues in the paper.
