MISHANDLING Inadvertent mishandling of library books accounts for a great deal of costly damage to our collection. The three samples here have been removed from the shelf improperly: pulled from the head, or top, of the spine. To remove a book from the shelf properly and without damaging the spine, grasp it at the middle of the spine. This can be done more easily when neighboring volumes are pushed back to allow a firm grip.
