INTERLEAVING An early preservation technique, interleaving experimented with the binding of blank pages into a book to reinforce the sewing of fragile pages and to slow their deterioration. Unfortunately, it added a great deal of bulk and required that the volume be oversewn which, as illustrated here, promotes the cracking and breaking away of pages from the text block as the pages become more and more brittle. The practice of interleaving was proven ineffective and eventually the procedure was abandoned.
