PRESERVATION MICROFILM INSPECTION Preservation microfilm is required to meet American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards for archivally produced, high quality microfilm. These standards are especially strict as they apply to the "master," or camera copy, which is eventually stored for safekeeping under archival conditions at an off-site facility.

To ensure that the master negative copy meets all required ANSI standards for high quality microfilm, each reel of master negative film is thoroughly inspected for density, resolution and completeness. Density testing measures the opacity of the film; resolution measures the accuracy of the cameras ability to capture detail; and completeness is ensured by a page-by-page inspection of each title microfilmed.
