ENCAPSULATION After deacidification, some fragile items are encapsulated in inert clear plastic Mylar. The item is sealed within the Mylar on all four sides with ultrasonic welds. This will protect it from air, dirt, and loss of text through breakage. Not only is the item now able to be safely handled by patrons without fear of damage, but it can also be bound in a post binding such as the one shown here for easy access and storage. Encapsulation is also appropriate for flat paper items such as posters.
