DEACIDIFICATION Deacidification is the process of impregnating paper with chemicals that neutralize the acids which make the paper brittle. In addition, a buffering agent is deposited to neutralize any acids which will form in the paper in the future, caused by pollutants in the air and other chemical reactions that take place in the paper as it ages. The life of some papers can be extended by as much as four times, but the deterioration process can only be slowed down, not stopped.
