| BRITTLE PAPER / OVERSEWN BINDING | Over time, the combination of acidic, brittle paper and the binding technique known as oversewing equals disaster. Oversewing was a popular library binding method practiced by commercial binders specifically for libraries because of the strength and durability it provided. Unfortunately, as the paper ages and weakens, the binding, still strong, overwhelms the paper and the pages crack and detach. Today, oversewing is used only as a binding technique of last resort. |
