| BRITTLE BOOKS | Brittle books is a term used to describe books with severely embrittled paper, like the one illustrated here. The paper in this volume is so brittle its pages crumble to the touch, leaving behind bits and pieces of paper, or "cornflakes." While the paper itself cannot be restored, the intellectual content of brittle books can be recovered through a process called preservation microfilming. |
