| BRITTLE BOOKS PROCESSING | As brittle books crumble on our shelves, it is heartening to know that through preservation microfilming the intellectual content of a book can be recovered for future research. Microfilming is a labor intensive exercise that involves elaborate searching procedures and extensive review before the decision to film is made. A bibliographer with a specialized knowledge of both the subject area involved and the collecting policies of the library makes the decision to film or withdraw materials that are too deteriorated to return to the shelf. The first worksheet on display reflects the steps that lead up to a bibliographers decision: in-house, in-print, and on-film searching. The second worksheet reflects the microfilm preparation process, including queuing and target preparation. |
