This selective guide to the literature of cinema is designed for use by undergraduate and beginning graduate students. All of the items listed are available in the Humanities and Social Sciences Reference Center (Ref1) on the main floor of Bobst Library.   • America at Work
    From the Library of Congress Project, American Memory, this presentation of 150 motion pictures chronicles work, school, and leisure activities in the United States from 1894 to 1915.

  • AFI Preservation Site
    Links to information about the American Film Institute and their film preservation initiatives, as well as other sites dedicated to film preservation.

  • Links to Major United States Film Archives via FOOTAGE.net
    Rick Prelinger, editor of Footage, has created this web page which provides access to those United States film archives that have created web sites.

  • Motion Picture Division, Library of Congress
    The Library of Congress has one of the largest film archives in the United States. This site gives some history behind the collection, provides information about services and viewing guidelines, and includes finding aids to some of their collections.

  • National Film Registry and Preservation Board
    A list of the motion pictures selected as part of the National Film Registry, as well as the process by which films are selected and a list of board members.

  • The Indiana University Black Film Center
    A repository for films and related materials by and about African-Americans.

  • Movietone News Archive
    Clips from Movietone Newsreels illustrate events from specific dates in history.

  • Internet Movie Database
    This is the largest international movie database on the Internet, containing over 52,000 film credits and 720,000 filmographies--and still growing.

  • Asian American Video Database
    Maintained by the University of California, Berkeley Media Resource Center this database lists videos in the Berkeley Media Collection focusing on the Asian American experience. Many of these titles are also available in the Avery Fisher Center in Bobst.

  • Bright Lights: Gay and Lesbian Cinema
    A list of film and video titles that focus on Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual themes.

  • Women's Studies Film Reviews (University of Maryland)
    Thoughtful reviews of films from a feminist perspective.

      Volumes 1-4 in this series each deal with a separate subject: Films, Directors/ Filmmakers, Actors & Actresses, Writers & Production Artists; volume 5 is the title index to the set. Entries include biographical or production data, complete filmographies (for individuals), signed critical articles and, most importantly, exhaustive bibliographies for further research.

      Best one-volume encyclopedia on cinema. Scope is international, with an emphasis on North American and European filmmakers. Provides mainly biographical information on directors, actors, composers, cinematographers, designers, etc., with some entries for technical terms, production companies, and national film histories.

      This encyclopedia is organized by film title. Each citation gives complete production credits, release dates, and synopsis of U.S. films and select foreign titles.

      Consisting of chronologically organized articles concerning film from the New York Times, this source covers the years 1896-1979. Contains a cumulative index.

      The only encyclopedia that focuses on the vast Indian film industry. Contains a bibliography and index.

      Consisting of two linked databases, one organized around film titles, the other around film personalities, this index covers films produced from the silent era through the present. Each index provides credit information, as well as biographical and bibliographic information.

      Indexes approx. 300 film, television, and general interest periodicals. Scope is international, though North America and Europe are emphasized. Move toward online access for the full run of the index is still in progress.

      A project of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF). Indexes approx. 90 specialized film journals, many of them foreign-language. Arranged by broad subjects: director, general subject, individual films, biography. Includes selective annotations.
