U.S. Economics

This research guide is intended for both graduate and undergraduate students seeking sources of economic statistics. Students are encouraged to speak to a reference librarian with specific requests and for assistance with special problems. In addition to the sources listed here, the library maintains a large collection of international economic data collected and compiled by central banks, the OECD, the United Nations, and the International Monetary Fund (to mention a few).

    Provides statistics on recent economic developments in OECD member countries. It is divided into two parts: indicators by subject and indicators by country. A separate supplement assembling sources and definitions on the indicators presented is published at annual intervals to reflect any changes in the composition of the series.

Section 4: PRIMARY SOURCES OF COMMONLY USED ECONOMIC STATISTICS

Most of the statistics used to measure the current and future state of the U.S. economy are produced by the federal government. Each agency generates its unique data which is then published in the periodicals listed below. Many of these publications also include an overview of other agencies' statistics in order to present a broad economic picture. For greater detail and fuller explanations of a particular statistic, however, the issuing body's own publication should be consulted.

    A monthly report covering consumer price movements. The data is separated into the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers and for Wage Earners and Clerical workers, reflecting data for U.S. city averages and selected areas. Covers the prices of the necessities of daily life--food, shelter, clothing, transportation, etc.

    (Formerly called the Wholesale Price Indexes) A monthly report measuring the average change in prices received by commodity producers in all stages of production, from crude goods, to the finished product, by commodity and by industry. These indexes are designed to measure real price changes. An annual supplement presents annual averages, cumulated monthly data for the year, and information on weights.

    GMID includes 28 years of market statistics from dozens of global industries. Includes market size, country marketing parameters and forecasting data.
