Ask a Librarian IM Policies

What is Ask-a-Librarian Instant Messaging Reference?

It is a way for members of the NYU community to quickly consult a librarian and to get help using library resources. Just send an IM to AskBobst using AIM, MSN, or Yahoo!

How can I tell if the service is really available?

There is a small icon of a yellow running man that appears on the page. If it looks solid-colored like this online, then AskBobst is online; if it looks transparent, like this offline, then we are unavailable, and you should try using one of our other Ask-a-Librarian options.

Who will receive my IM?

A team of librarians will answer questions. If you do not receive an immediate response to your IM, please try using one of our other Ask-a-Librarian options.

What types of questions may I ask using IM?

You may ask any question you might ask at one of our reference desks. Keep in mind that IM is a quick form of communication, so, if your question requires an in-depth response, you may be referred to another type of reference service.

When is IM reference available?

AskBobst is generally available:

  • Monday-Thursday from 10am-12 midnight
  • Friday and Saturday from 11am-6pm
  • Sunday from 1pm-10pm.
If you send an IM to AskBobst and do not receive an immediate response, please try using one of our other Ask-a-Librarian options.

Will a record of my question be kept?

NYU's Division of Libraries is committed to protecting the privacy of our users. Information collected through our IM virtual reference services will not be shared with any third parties. Any personal information (NetID, E-Mail address, etc.) collected through this service will be periodically purged.

Who will receive e-mail my question?

A team of librarians will answer questions and refer to expert colleagues as needed.

Who can use Ask-a-Librarian E-Mail Reference?

We can reply to questions from outside NYU only if the question pertains to NYU itself, or to a resource unique to NYU. Otherwise, you may wish to try the Internet Public Library or New York Public Library's Ask Librarians Online (you will need a valid NYPL card).
